One More Game
Well, the season is just about over and I am sure you, like me, are disappointed with how this season has gone for the Jaguars.  It wasn’t the season any of us expected, but a lot has happened off the field that makes me optimistic.  With new ownership and a soon-to-be new head coach, there is plenty to be excited about as we begin 2012.  While I am excited for the future, I don’t want to blog about that today.  Let’s focus on Sunday’s game against the Colts and what it means for us.  First and foremost, it will be our chance as a fan base and a city to say good-bye to the couple that was responsible for bringing the NFL to Jacksonville, Wayne and Delores Weaver.  I have often talked about what they have meant to me personally, to the fans and to the city as a whole, so there is no reason to repeat it again.  One thing we need to make sure we do is fill EverBank Field this Sunday and give them a proper good-bye.  I know we have underperformed this year, but Sunday’s game is much bigger than one game; it is about celebrating the Weavers and the fact that the Jaguars are OUR team.  Make sure you use your tickets and get your friends to come with you, as we say good-bye to the Weavers and we welcome the Khan family to Jacksonville.   One final note about the game itself.  I have been asked often this week about whether I want to win or not, considering that a loss would get us a better draft position.  The answer is easy; I always ... A Busy Week
I don’t know about the rest of you Jaguars fans, but I am worn out from all that has transpired this week with our Jacksonville Jaguars.  Let me approach these major decisions one at a time.    First, the firing of Jack Del Rio.  I think everyone would agree Mr. Weaver was more than patient with Jack and it was time to make a change.  Jack was given nine years to build the Jaguars into a winning team that could compete for championships, but we just are not there at this time.  I wish Jack and his family all the best with their next endeavor, yet I look forward to seeing who our next coach will be.    Secondly, the decision to extend Gene Smith, I am in agreement and like the move for a few reasons.  I think that Gene has done a good job over the last 3 years he has been the G.M., of rebuilding this roster.  He has taken a defense that was 28th in the NFL last year and has added the personnel that has made it a top-five defense this year.  Extending Gene brings some stability to the football side of the building during the transition to a new head coach and new ownership.  He has been in Jacksonville since the beginning  and is very well liked and respected.  Gene has earned the right to finish what he has started and have a chance to put in for his choice as the head coach.  I think to truly evaluate a GM you have to give him a chance to name at least one head coach.    And finally the big one, Mr. and Mrs. Weaver selling the team to Shahid Khan.  The Weavers selling the team didn’t surprise me, but the timing of it definitely did.  I can’t say enough how much I appreciate what the Weavers have done for the Jaguars organization and the city of Jacksonville.  They have been model owners since they brought the team to Jacksonville and all of us are fortunate that they have owned the team.  Their legacy in the Jacksonville community will be impactful for years to come.  I am personally grateful to them for bringing me to Jacksonville and always supporting what my family and I have done in the city.  Their presence will be missed within the Jaguars organization.  Let’s make sure we fill the stadium these last three home games, especially Monday Night’s nationally televised game, as a small token of our appreciation and give them a proper good bye.  I know this transition of ownership has a lot of people nervous and asking what will happen next.  While I understand how uncertainty can lead to being fearful of the future for our Jaguars in Jacksonville, I am very confident Mr. Khan is committed to giving his best efforts to make the Jaguars a success in Jacksonville.  I have always believed Mr. Weaver would only sell the team to an individual that felt the same way he did about the future of the NFL in our city.  Mr. Khan has stated that he is committed to Jacksonville and wants to build the Jaguars here.  I believe him.  Now it is our job to continue to grow our fan base and to fill EverBank Field every weekend.  Let’s start by making Monday Night a packed house.                                                                                                                                                                                                                          &nbs ... Happy Thanksgiving Team Teal
I want to wish all Team Teal members and Jaguars fans “Happy Thanksgiving” and let you know that I am thankful for all the support you have given the Jaguars this season.  Even with our record, you continue to come out and fill EverBank Field every home game.  Let’s keep it up for the rest of the year.  This coming Sunday is the Military Appreciation game against the Texans, which is followed by a big Monday night contest on December 5th against the San Diego Chargers.  We will be having the 2011 Ultimate Tealgate party for the Monday night game, so make sure you don’t miss out on a great evening of fun and football.    Again, happy Thanksgiv ... Mid-Season Report
There’s no doubt that it’s been a tough season so far. I am sure you, like me, are disappointed at the outcome of the first eight games after having such high expectations coming into the season.     While the losses have outnumbered the wins, and at the end of the day that is all that matters in the NFL, there have also been some positive things that should give all Jaguars fans hope for the future.  For starters, our defense has been awesome.  They have kept us in every game until the end, with the exception of the Jets game.  Even when the offense has struggled, our defense’s great effort has given us chances to win at the end of games.  We should also consider that this defense is young and most of the players on this unit are signed to long term deals.  Our defense, is only going to get better.    On the offensive side, it hasn’t been nearly as positive, but some of the disappointment is down to growing pains with a rookie QB.  While Blaine has to continue to improve for us to be the team we want to be, he has shown glimpses of why we made him the 10th pick of this year’s draft.  He has all the tools a QB needs to be great and the areas where he struggles are all fixable with hard work and coaching.  I am hopeful that his best football is coming in the second half of this season.  If we can improve our passing game it will make the running game, led by Maurice Jones-Drew, even more dangerous.  What he has done during the first half of the season is amazing.  Week in, and week out, he continues to show why he is one of the best running backs in the NFL.   With the first eight games behind us, let’s all renew our hope, believe the best about our Jaguars and get ready for an exciting second half of the season.  As fans, you have done an amazing job once again supporting our team.  We have gone 17 home games since 2009 without a blackout, so let’s keep it goin ... Now that is what I am talking about!!!  What a great game and the effects of the "12th MAN" were evident at EverBank Field on Monday night.    Jaguars fans showed their Teal and filled the stadium Monday night.  Special thanks to all who bought tickets to the game.  We showed the nation that Jacksonville supports it's team. For the fans in the stadium Monday night and those who watched it on TV, we witnessed possibly the best defensive performance in the history of the Jaguars franchise.  Unbelievable!!!  The defense held the Ravens to ZERO 1st downs in the first 2 ½ quarters of the game and under 200 yards for the entire game.  LIGHTS OUT!!!    The entire defense played extremely well.  Two guys who played their best yet were Rashean Mathis and Derek Cox.  They blanketed the Ravens wide receivers all night and gave Flacco no room to throw the ball.  While the offense never made it to the endzone, there were still some great plays on that side of the ball.  Our offensive line played an outstanding game both in the run and pass.  They helped Maurice Jones-Drew run for over 100 yards against one of the NFL's top notch defenses and gave Blaine Gabbert plenty of time in the pocket.  Eugene Monroe played very well against Suggs and the rest of the defensive ends they lined up against him.  Rookie Will Rackley had his best game of the year and Josh Scobee had an incredible performance, with 3 kicks over 50 yards.  An awesome performance that tied an NFL record for number of kicks over 50 yards in one game.   Now it’s off to Houston.  A win there and we are only one game out of first place in the AFC South.  We ... I tell you one thing, it is a lot easier writing the Team Teal blog when we are playing well and winning.  At 1-4, coming off a loss to Cincinnati, it is tough to find a silver lining with where the Jaguars are right now as a team.  The last couple weeks I have consistently heard and felt the disappointment of our Jaguars fans, and I can understand why they feel this way.  The fan side of me is extremely frustrated that we cannot find a way to finish and win games.  We have had our opportunities but haven’t taken advantage of them to produce victories.  I promise you, as frustrated, disappointed and mad as we are as fans, the players are even more.  Losing stinks!!!  There are no two ways about it.  The players on this team, and every person who is a part of the organization, wants that losing taste out of their mouth.  And the only way we do that is WIN!!!  Let’s root our team on this week against Pittsburgh and get ready to fill EverBank the following Monday night against the Ravens.  Let’s start getting ... I knew it would be a tough game yesterday in New York against the Jets, but I didn’t see what happened coming.  I am surprised we didn’t play much better on offense and I hate to waste such a great defensive effort in a bad loss.  Let me mention some good things that came out of yesterday, especially since the bad ones are so obvious.  On the offensive side of the ball, we continue to prove that we have the ability to run the ball on anyone in the NFL.  The Jets, year in and year out under Rex Ryan, have one of the best run defenses in the league and we still had success with MJD despite a very poor passing game.  If we can improve in that one area we will be able to compete and beat every team on our schedule.  We just have to understand that our margin of error is very small.  I was so impressed with the tough, physical running of MJD.  Watching him yesterday reminded me that we have the privilege of having one the best backs in the NFL.  That coupled with the never quit attitude he showed in a bad loss, makes me respect him all the more as a player.  On the defensive side of the ball we can play with anyone.  During the 1st two weeks of the season we haven’t allowed an opposing offense over 300 yards of total offense, only the 3rd time in franchise history this has happened.  Two players that really stood out were Terrance “Pot Roast” Knighton and Rashean Mathis.  “Pot Roast” showed yesterday that he is truly a dominating presence in the middle of our defense.  The Jets offensive line had absolutely no answer for him.  Rashean played outstanding yesterday, being all over the field in the pass game and being a physical presence in the run game.  What our defense was able to do yesterday, as well as week one is very encour ... Now that is the way to start the season!  A BIG win verses the hated Titans!  Interesting to watch as the Jaguars went back to playing their style of football: tough, run-first attitude (47 carries for 165 yards), smart conservative passing game, and a tough stingy defense (what was missing last year).  This will be the winning formula for the Jaguars all season.  The way the team played in Week One is a major reason I felt they will have a chance to compete in the AFC South this year.  That, coupled with the fact that Indy has a huge unknown for the first time in years at the QB position and Tennessee is clearly in a rebuilding situation, bodes well for the Jaguars.  The AFC South is curren ... Team Teal nets Draft trip for Andrew
BEING  a member of Team Teal had it’s benefits for Andrew Benjamin after the two-year Jaguars season ticket owner won the Team Teal “Help Make our Draft Selection” contest.   Andrew, who lives in Hudson, Florida, just outside Tampa, and makes a 400-mile round trip to attend Jaguars games at EverBank Field, enjoyed a weekend in New York City at the 2011 Draft and also got the opportunity to announce Jaguars fourth-round pick, Cecil Shorts III, from the Jaguars draft table inside Radio City Music Hall after being drawn at random from all Team Teal members to win the Draft contest.   Andrew brought best buddy and fellow Jaguars season ticket owner Stephen Geidel from Port Richey as his guest. Stephen also travels over 400-miles round-trip to attend Jaguars games each season. Both became Jaguars season ticket owners when they joined Team Teal.   An excited Andrew, said: “It was an amazing experience not only to be able to come and see the Draft but also to take part in it and announce Cecil from the Jaguars table.   “Both Stephen and I travel a long way to support our Jaguars but we really didn’t mind this trip at all. Team Teal Members,   What an exciting home schedule we have this year for the Jacksonville Jaguars!    With the release of the NFL schedule for 2011, we have a lot to be looking forward to this football season.  Our Jaguars are looking to improve on last year’s 8-8 record as we open the 2011 season at home against the hated Tennessee Titans.  We will be ready to give their new coach, Mike Munchak, his 1st official loss.  And that is just the beginning!  The home schedule is highlighted by an October 2nd match-up against Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints that will be sure to provide plenty of fireworks (hopefully all Jaguars).  Jacksonville will also host two Monday night games in 2011.  One against the Baltimore Ravens on October 24th, and another against the San Diego Chargers on December 5th.  We then close the season against the defending AFC South Champions, Indianapolis Colts, on January 1st.   That schedule should lead to some exciting and possibly thrilling games in 2011 for the Jacksonville Jaguars.  Now we need to make sure it is the same great atmosphere we had last year at EverBank Field.  That means it is time for us to crank TEAM TEAL up to another level and get the word out to Jag Nation that it is time to buy your ... WE ARE JAGUARS!!!   This past Wednesday the issues between the NFL owners and the players’ union began in a Minnesota courtroom while the fans of the great game of football have to sit back and wonder, “what does all this mean for us this season?”    Fans want to know that they will be able to see their favorite team hit the practice field this August, and even more importantly, that they will be able to cheer with passion and excitement for their favorite team this fall while WATCHING THE NFL.  It is frustrating for all of us that this has been drawn out and that it is now being fought openly in a court of law.     For me, not only as commissioner of Team Teal – but as a former player and current fan, this labor dispute has frustrated me immensely.  I have seen all the momentum that we created around Team Teal come to a screeching halt. Because of the lockout, our fans have taken a wait and see attitude, and part of me understands why.     Their comments include “why should I commit when the players and owners can’t get their acts together?”  Some fans, as a sign of a protest, are saying that they won’t renew or purchase new season tickets until the lockout is over.  The problem is that the only people hurt by this stance is all of us. I am afraid that the frustration being shared by many of our loyal fans unfortunately misses the bigger picture.     By not renewing or purchasing season tickets, we are putting ourselves right back into the position that we fought so hard to get out of last year.  If we have an empty stadium this year no one will give us a break because there was a lock out.  All they will talk about is how last year was an anomaly and we are right back to being “blackout city”. The national media will renew their stance that Jacksonville doesn’t deserve a team and that it should move.  Frankly, going backwards from what we accomplished last year is unacceptable.     I am asking you once again to support our team for all the same reasons I talked about last year.  The Jaguars are making this a no-risk scenario for you.  Meaning, if they don’t play football, not only do you get your money back – you get it back with interest. With that said, I know in my heart they will get this worked out and we will be playing football!   The bottom-line is this; the Jaguars remain an important asset to our community when it comes to economic impact, the non-profit community and the current and future identity of our entire region.  T ... With the lockout now in full effect, what do we have to look forward to as Team Teal and Jaguar fans?  Well, the good news is that football is so far off that there is plenty of time to get this worked out. The only thing affected, besides our sanity, has been free agency.  The biggest event of the offseason, the NFL Draft, will not be affected at all.   The Draft has become such an important weekend to every team in the NFL and something every fan should look forward to.  It is one of my favorite events of the year outside of an NFL actual game, and is the main way that we are going to see the Jaguars grow and improve as a team.  Personally, I can’t wait to see who Gene Smith and his staff of scouts add to the team.  The young players they draft will be critical building blocks in the making of a championship team.  So as you can see, not all is not loss at this point of the lockout.&nbs ...
